Joshua-Paul Miles

Dr. Joshua-Paul Miles, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His interdisciplinary research examines how organizations, including nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, and health and human service organizations, collaborate through interorganizational networks to address complex social challenges. His work focuses on network governance and leadership, communication technologies, coordination, and the processes that shape network effectiveness and resilience. He has studied collaborative systems serving populations including military veterans and their families, older adults, youth, and communities navigating complex health and social service systems. His research has been published in Management Communication Quarterly, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, among others.

Dr. Miles leads the Miles Group for Communication and Networks, which houses his research program, and is a member of Across the PONs, an international collaboration examining purpose-oriented networks across national contexts. He is also a Faculty Affiliate of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois System, the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, and the Center for Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Media, Technology, and Society from Northwestern University, where his research focused on networks, and his bachelor’s degree in Corporate Communication and Spanish for International Business from Marquette University.
