Research Interests

Dr. Joshua-Paul Miles, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Through an interdisciplinary communication lens, his research explores how organizations—such as nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies—collaborate within interorganizational networks to address complex social challenges. His work engages with a variety of collaborative networks, including integrated health and human services systems, education networks, and community-based networks that support groups such as military veterans and their families, senior citizens, and youth. By focusing on key factors such as network governance and leadership, the use of information and communication technologies, and the responsibilities of personnel within networks, Dr. Miles investigates the mechanisms that enhance network effectiveness and resilience. His work has been published in Management Communication Quarterly, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, among others.

Dr. Miles is also the lead of the Miles Group for Communication and Networks, which houses his research program. His scholarship examines how collaborative networks produce outputs and outcomes at the individual, organizational, and network levels.

He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. in Media, Technology, and Society, with a research focus on networks, from Northwestern University, and completed his Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Communication and Spanish for International Business at Marquette University.
